It is not okay that a hacker stole and then released celebrities' private photographs. It is not okay that individuals are viewing and sharing these photos never intended for the public eye, perpetuating the original injustice with each click.

It is not okay that, all over the world, people are taking to Twitter, Reddit, and various website comment sections to place blame on the female celebrities for taking the photographs in the first place.

Individual women have control over their individual bodies, period. The person behind this blatant invasion of privacy should absolutely be held responsible.

But if we come together and advocate for this for a week, or two weeks, and then let the incident slowly fade from relevance, we are not addressing the larger problem at hand.

The stealing of these photos, the audience that's hungry for them, and the victim-blaming comments sweeping the web all emerge from a culture that endorses the idea that women's bodies exist for public consumption.

Just look to our media landscape for evidence: Countless cosmetic and beauty ads suggest women's bodies exist only to be sexy to men. Films and television shows repeatedly use female bodies as props for male characterization, or depict them as trophies for a male hero to win at the end of his tale.

Just last week, the Emmys presented Sofia Vergara's body as "something compelling to look at" while she rotated round and round on a raised pedestal.

At the time, many questioned what the harm of the bit could be if Vergara was in on the joke herself. But objectification does not require a lack of consent.

Regardless of whether Vergara willingly participated, the idea presented to the public was "haha, women's bodies exist to be nice things to look at, for the entertainment of others.

It would be easy to dismiss the events that happened over the weekend as the work of one violating individual, work to bring him due punishment, and go back to the world of so-called gender equality.

But that would only ensure that events like this keep happening, again and again. We absolutely do need to bring the hacker responsible for this abuse -- and it is abuse -- to justice.

But we also need to keep sight of the greater context of this incident. The issue of female body ownership is at the heart of so many of the oppressive issues today's women face, whether it be the greater arena of revenge porn , cat-calling , the assault on reproductive rights or rape.

But because we live in a culture that constantly violates women's rights to have ownership over their own bodies. But more often than not, after the shock value of the incident subsides, they return to life as usual, as aggressions against the female body continue to occur every day.

Just last week, the Emmys presented Sofia Vergara's body as "something compelling to look at" while she rotated round and round on a raised pedestal.

In the months that followed the incident, the star denounced the hack as a 'sex crime' and a 'flagrant violation of privacy'. In , Chicago hacker Edward Majerczyk was sentenced to nine months in prison for illegally accessing email belonging to more than people, including those of celebrities.

Opening up about the gross invasion of privacy on several occasions over the years, the actress had said that she continues to feel the effects of being exposed to the world.

In an interview with Scott Feinberg on The Hollywood Reporter 's Awards Chatter Podcast in November , the actress opened up about the leak, admitting that she still hadn't come to terms with what happened.

I think that I am still actually processing,' she explained. There was not one person in the world that is not capable of seeing these intimate photos of me.

The Hunger Games star revealed that several women had contacted her about bringing a lawsuit against technology company Apple which later revealed hackers hadn't penetrated its systems, as was widely believed, rather targeted 'names, passwords and security questions'.

During the interview, Lawrence recalled a time when someone came up to her following the incident and described her as a role model for young women, forcing her to run to the toilets and burst into tears.

Touching on the Harvey Weinstein sexual assault and harassment scandal which came to light a month prior, the star described the film producer as a 'paternal' figure in her career.

I heard that he was a dog but he was always almost paternal to me,' she shared. I thought we had a nice relationship where when he acted like an asshole, I called him an asshole.

I actually think the word I used was a sadistic monster, but it was just never of that nature so that was really shocking.
